The Elaine Ione Sprauve Public Library is not just a place for books—it’s a historical treasure housed in the Enighed Estate House, a 1757 plantation great house with deep roots in St. John’s history.
What You’ll Find
Books & Local Archives – The library features an extensive collection of books, old photographs, newspaper clippings, and paintings showcasing St. John’s history.
️ Historic Landmark – Originally owned by the Wood family, the estate suffered a fire in the early 1900s, leaving it in ruins for decades. After restoration, it was renamed in 1980 to honor Elaine Ione Sprauve for her contributions to the Virgin Islands.
️ National Register of Historic Places – Recognized in 1976, the site stands as one of the earliest substantial buildings of its kind on the island.
Although the Museum of Cultural Arts is no longer part of the facility, the library remains a must-visit for history buffs, researchers, and anyone looking to experience a piece of St. John’s past.
